In 2010, the PWYP coalition in Mauritania has hosted four thematic commissions, and taken a lead in conducting substantive research and data collection – in order to see progress in the following areas: greater protection for workers in the extractive sector, assessments of the environmental impacts of the extractives industries, the granting of preferential fiscal treatment to cities located in extractive areas, and the provision of socio-economic support to local communities in those areas.
In undertaking such activities, PWYP coalition members have reached out to different types of actors. MPs and the scientific research community have been called upon to tackle problems highlighted by the work of the various appointed commissions. Local communities have been consulted, increasing their awareness and support for the PWYP campaign in Mauritania.
PWYP Mauritania is actively committed to strengthening the capacity of its member organizations, and members have participated in international and regional trainings – such as a programme set up by Norwegian Church Aid, and the PWYP regional francophone workshop in Abidjan in January 2010. Currently, their emphasis is directed at national and sub-national levels, as they work to inform local communities about their rights.
As part of this effort, in August 2009, the coalition reviewed its statutory structures. Not only is PWYP Mauritania reinforcing its established regional committees (Akjoujt , Zouerate, Mamkhar et Nouadhibou), it is seeking to expand its network in the eastern regions, where extraction activities have recently started. The coalition is also keen to establish pressure groups in key institutions and cities.
