Mauritania’s predominant natural resources are minerals (iron ore, gypsum, copper phosphate, gold and diamonds) as well as fish and petrol. From 2000 – 2005 iron ore represented 53.4% of its total exports and made up 16.2% of the country’s GDP. Mauritania ranks 15th in the world’s list of iron ore producers, producing 11,000 of tonnes of iron ore in 2010. Oil production started in 2006 and Mauritania’s proven and probable oil reserves have been estimated at around 600 million barrels.

About the campaign

The coalition in Mauritania was launched in August 2006 and is made up of a central coalition office ; a steering committee and a technical team. It focuses on four specific issues: the implementation of EITI in Mauritania ; influencing national legislation ; promoting social responsibility through transparency in the use of revenues and campaigning for transparency of contracts. Some of its greatest achievements include the training of thematic groups in advocacy techniques and the special dispensation toward extractive cities included in the state’s budget.

Recent activities

29 January 2013PWYP Mauritania’s technical coordinator published a paper on Mauritania’s progress, or lack of, on EITI

8 – 11 December 2011 – The coalition organised a workshop to train local and regional NGOs to better engage with the EITI. Sessions covered the objectives of the EITI and the role civil society can play in its implementation. Participants also analysed and evaluated the Mauritanian EITI report of 2009 and provided recommendations as to how these reports can be improved in the future.

29 June 2011 – The Mauritanian coalition held an extraordinary Assembly General. The members elected and installed a new coalition board comprised of six members.
